BLACKSBURG, JUST MINUTES FROM HARVEY'S CHEVROLET, HAS A UNIQUE HISTORY ALL ITS OWN
One of the best things about being located in Southern Virginia is that town history and American history often coincide--a benefit of being located in one of the 13 original colonies! Harvey's Chevrolet is proud that our friends and customers in Blacksburg make the short drive south when they need a new or used Chevrolet, Buick, or Cadillac. By the same token, we enjoy spending a sunny afternoon or perfect fall evening in Blacksburg!
A Far-Reaching History
The European settlers first discovered modern-day Blacksburg way back in 1671, when two explorers used it as a pass through the Alleghany Mountains on their mission to expand and discover more about the new colony of Virginia.
Blacksburg officially became a town in 1798, well after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War and the formation of the United States of America. Samuel Black purchased nearly 600 acres of land in the area in 1772 for his two sons, and the land was divided between them in 1792 following his death. The town was officially established as Blacksburg in 1798, in honor of Samuel Black. Much of the original 600-acre purchase now comprises the Virginia Tech campus!
Home Of Virginia Tech University
The full name is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, but the thousands of proud Hokies alums and fans around the world simply call it Virginia Tech. This public research university boasts an enrollment of approximately 35,000 students, and was established in 1872.
Virginia Tech is the largest employer in Blacksburg, and also is the home to some of the town's top attractions. College football is one of America's favorite pastimes, and the full pageantry is on display when the Hokies host a game on a fall afternoon or evening. Lane Stadium holds more than 66,000 fans capable of making the ground shake every time Virginia Tech makes a big play. A game in Lane Stadium is an experience that every college football fan will enjoy!
Hahn Horticulture Garden
The Alleghany Mountains aren't the only source of natural beauty in Blacksburg. The Virginia Tech campus is also home to the Hahn Horticulture Garden, a 6-acre marvel that's open to the public year-round. Virginia Tech students and local community members can learn more about plant life and garden knowledge through available programs.
The facility contains eight distinct areas, with different varieties of plants and gardens, including a water garden, arboretum, tulip beds, and numerous other plant species. It's the perfect place to visit when you need some quiet time. Event spaces for weddings and other celebrations are available as well. The Hahn Horticulture Garden is six acres of quiet bliss on an otherwise bustling college campus!
Smithfield Plantation
If you're intrigued by the hardships and lifestyle facing Blacksburg-area residents in the time of the Revolutionary War, the Smithfield Plantation is a nearly pristine time capsule. It was established in 1774, and grew into a place where settlers would rest and restock supplies before pushing west into new territory. The home and surrounding outbuildings combine to give visitors a complete sense of what life was like back in 1774, when your livelihood depended on your ability to farm, raise livestock, and sustain through the long, cold winter.
Visitors can tour the grounds, and some of the facilities are available for weddings and receptions. If you appreciate history and are curious to know what life was like when the United States was fighting for its independence, the Smithfield Plantation is a must-visit!
